HBH AND BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY WORKING TOGETHER TOWARDS THE SAME GOAL

As concerns about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment continue to grow, organizations and individuals are stepping up efforts to clean up beaches and waterways. On Earth Day this year, the Hollywood Beach Hotels partnered with the Broward County Library. We organized a massive beach clean-up event on Hollywood Beach. The event was a resounding success! With over 160 volunteers showing up to help remove litter and debris from the beach.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW?

The event took place on Earth Day. Which falls on April 22nd every year and is celebrated globally as a day to raise awareness about environmental issues. We have been planning the event for weeks, and it was a well-coordinated effort. Volunteers were provided with gloves, bags, and other equipment to help them pick up litter and debris from the beach.

THE VOLUNTEERS

The volunteers worked tirelessly for several hours. Scouring the beach for any litter and debris that could harm marine life or spoil the beauty of the beach. They collected plastic bottles, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and other forms of litter, filling up several bags in the process. We are proud to say that we contributed to the effort by providing free bottles of water to the volunteers. Helping to keep them hydrated and energized throughout the day.

It will involve different activities, such as tree planting and recycling campaigns. We are inviting more people to get involved in these initiatives and help make a positive impact on the environment.

research facts

Hollywood Beach is a popular tourist destination located in Broward County, Florida. With miles of pristine coastline and crystal clear waters. However, like many beaches around the world, it has also been affected by plastic pollution. With litter and debris washing up on the shorelines every day.

ONE OF TOP TEN BEACHES IN US FOR PLASTIC POLLUTION

In fact, according to a report by the Ocean Conservancy, Hollywood Beach was one of the top ten beaches in the US for plastic pollution. With over 4,200 pounds of trash collected in just one day in 2019. This includes items such as plastic bottles, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and single-use plastics. All of which pose a threat to marine life and the environment.

PLASTIC STRAWS

Plastic straws are one of the most common items found on beaches. They can have a devastating impact on marine life, particularly turtles. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), over 100 million marine animals, including turtles, are killed each year. All due to plastic pollution. Turtles are particularly vulnerable as they often mistake plastic items for food and ingest them. Leading to severe health problems and even death.

PLASTIC STRAWS ON THE BEACH
Along the coast of South Florida these is how many plastic straws are found daily!

During the BEACH pollution rescue event on Earth Day, volunteers found hundreds of plastic straws on the beach. That is highlighting the urgent need for action to address plastic contamination. That being said, are committed to promoting awareness about plastic pollution and are encouraging people to switch to reusable alternatives. To single-use plastics, such as metal straws and water bottles.

WHAT ABOUT THE TURTLES?

Turtles are a vital part of the marine ecosystem, and their survival is crucial for maintaining the balance of the ocean’s food chain. However, plastic pollution is a significant threat to their survival. With many turtles ingesting plastic items and getting entangled in fishing nets and other debris.

The HBH and the Broward County Library are working to protect turtles and other marine animals through their sustainability initiatives. They are promoting responsible tourism practices, such as reducing plastic waste and minimizing disturbance to wildlife habitats. They are also partnering with local organizations to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on turtles and other marine life.

By working together and promoting responsible tourism practices, we can all make a positive impact on the environment. We can help protect turtles and other marine animals for generations to come.
